I recently watched the dead don't die and at first I was a little confused about how fast it changet it's development from about the middle or near the end. I was actually satisfied with what i thought of the movie and I looked it up online to see that many people don't like the movie because of its lack of story and the wasted potential of the actors or so on.
I think many people are looking for the wrong things in this movie because it is a HUGE joke on all Zombie movies, right?
I mean there are many famous roles which are extremely stereotypic and they all just end in an unsatisfying death just so the protagonists could kill them all in the end with stupid oneliners, which i thought hilarious.
At first I felt like i missed something with the 4th wall script joke but now I think i got it.
It is a commentary about the producers in Hollywood and how actors get casted for movies just to have a star in it, so people wil watch it in spite of everyone involved knowing exactly how stupid and serial these movies are.
Swintons role as alien is another thing that happens frequently when the start to develop a badass character just to finish it up with the most random plot twist during the production, many movies change completely during the production so that the scripts arent even close to the original anymore, hence Drivers commentary about the UFO.
The way Adam Driver talks about the script in face of death seems rather bored and then he suddenly talks like someone outside the movie to murray all very desinterested, which i thought to be an interesting move.
I am not very sure about how to rate this movie because, espacially in the end it had a lot of edges, but then I think this is exactly what the intended for it to show how the story goes on more and more in an improvised fashion.
And what I really liked was the wasteful use of famous actors for the most stereotypic and flat roles, that all died just ofscreen and suddenly reappeard all at the same time around the car for the big showdown.
So all in all I think this movie was so parodic, in a smart and unusual way, while being unbelievably stupid and completely common, which is kind of paradox.
This is what makes me like the movie and feel like maybe it is widely misunderstood, they are asking about a deeper meaning or another layer, while its lying right on the surface with its overexageration.
From what I read online many people see it just for what every other zombie movie is even though you couldn't make it more obvious to be joking...
Maybe it even attracted the wrong audience by its publicity, because I think people who don't watch zombie movies or common horror movies that often, because they feel like there is a lot of disappointments on the way, should enjoy this movies humor and overall point.
I think it is a little funny too, that, for many people, the movie doesn't seem to be seperable from other more serious approaches to zombie movies. It says a lot about the horror movie industry.
On the other hand I have to admit, that it felt off to watch the movie and that might have made it harder to see the point.
Because of the sudden swings and rough edges in the end, I had a lot of different feelings while watching the movie. I had to realize again and again that its joking in a very peculiar way, moving in a kind of switching pace and the sudden endings of many storylines where kind of weird to experience too.
But the overall tone, appearance and character development felt like it matched these experiences and like I said earlier, I felt it was supposed to be like that to show differences in the style and production due to story changes and random improvising nearing the end. So it all revolves about their central argument.
What do you think about it or am I wrong?
