This was one of my favorite movies growing up ( I'm 54 ). Sean Penn plays Brad Whitewood Jr., a bored, disaffected small town teenager facing an uncertain future. Suddenly homeless and desperate for money, he eventually reunites with his estranged dad Brad Sr. ( played by Christopher Walken ) . Brad Sr. is a professional career criminal and the boss of a powerful criminal gang in their small town.
Brad Sr. is well known ( and also feared ) throughout the community. He has a hand in nearly every criminal enterprise in that town. He eventually takes Jr. under his wing and shows him the finer points of a life of crime. What Jr. learns far too late is just how greedy, selfish, violent, and paranoid his old man is.
The entire film is based on the real-life exploits of the Johnston gang, who terrorized their small rural Pennsylvania town all throughout the 1960s and 1970s. submitted by /u/OldCarWorshipper
